Sea Transportation
At present, seaborne volume accounts for more than 80% of the total international freight volume. The reason why sea transportation is so widely used is that it has the following obvious advantages compared with other modes of international
cargo transportation:
(1) Extensive Route
Sea transportation can make use of natural waterways extending in all directions, unlike trains and cars which are limited by tracks and roads, so their routes are extensive.
(2) Large Transportation Capacity
The transport capacity of ship is much larger than that of railway. For example, the loading capacity of a 10,000-ton ship is equivalent to that of 250-300 wagons.
(3) Low Freight Rate

Sea transportation freight rate is relatively low, because the transportation cost per freight ton is averaged to a lower level with the large volume and long distance from the point of view of scale economy.
Although sea transportation has the above advantages, it also has some shortcomings. For example, sea transportation is greatly affected by climate and natural conditions, and the sail schedule is not easy to be accurate. In addition, the speed of sea transportation is also relatively low.
