Transportation of Dangerous Chemicals
According to the United Nations Model Recommendation on Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG), dangerous goods are classified on the basis of their direct physical or chemical hazards to people, property or the environment. Dangerous goods are classified into nine categories, namely:
Category 1 is explosives, which are respectively: item 1 category 1, substances and articles with risk of mass detonation or explosion of total contents; item 2 category 1, substances and articles with no risk of mass detonation or explosion of total contents,; item 3 category 1, substances and articles with combustion hazard and local explosion hazard or local burst hazard, or both, but with no risk of mass detonation or explosion of total contents; item 4 category 1, substances that do not show significant hazard; item 5 category 1, very insensitive substances with risk of mass detonation or explosion of total contents; item 6 category 1, extremely insensitive substances with no risk of mass detonation or explosion of total content.
In international sea transportation, category 1 dangerous goods is very challenging. The representative products of category 1 dangerous goods are fireworks and firecrackers. There are very few domestic freight forwarders that can handle the export of this dangerous which is mostly handled by state-owned enterprises. China has very strict requirements for the transportation of category 1 dangerous goods, where road transportation, port qualifications and barge companies are all ruled.
According to the many years' experience in international shipping of dangerous goods of Changhao International Logistics, only a few ports such as Shanghai Port can export Category 1 dangerous goods, and other ports do not have the permission to export Category 1 dangerous goods.
Category 2 is gas, which includes: item 1 category 2, flammable gases; item 2 category 2, non-flammable and non-toxic gases; item 3 category 2, toxic gases.
In international shipping, market of category 2 dangerous goods are also prosperous.
Flammable gases under category 2.1 are represented by products of automobile spray paint, etc. These products basically need iron-can packaging, as a result, for export declaration, a dangerous package certificate are required, etc., and the port that can handle such products is Shanghai Port.
Category 2.2 dangerous goods are non-flammable and non-toxic gases, which are represented by products such as party cannons,. Such products are declared as non-dangerous goods by many export units on market , transported as general goods and exported to countries such as the United States or Europe which requires they shall be declared as dangerous goods for customs clearance by Consignees, otherwise it is difficult to clear customs, so it is recommended to handle these products as category 2.2 dangerous goods. Such dangerous goods can be handled at Shenzhen, Shanghai and other big ports.
Category 2.3 dangerous goods are toxic gases, which are more difficult to transport. Their typical products are compressed gas, hydrogen sulfide, and various industrial gases, which can be handled at Shanghai Port.
Category 3 is flammable liquid.
At present, the export volume of dangerous goods under category 3 is relatively huge, which typically are paint, coating, glue, adhesive, alcohol and so on. Such flammable liquid is highly sensitive to flash point. Attention should be paid to control the environmental temperature during transportation and storage. Ports that can export such products are very common, such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Qingdao and other ports.
Category 4 is flammable solids, substances that are prone to spontaneous combustion, and substances that emit flammable gases in contact with water, including: item 1 category 4, flammable solids; item 2 category 4, substances that are prone to spontaneous combustion; item 3 category 4, substances that emit flammable gases in contact with water.
Among the dangerous goods under category 4, the most important ones are flammable materials under 4.2 and 4.3. Many ports can not handle export of such products, and many dangerous goods warehouses cannot store such dangerous goods. Many dangerous goods accidents were caused by dangerous goods under category 4 before.
Category 5 is oxidizing substances and organic peroxides, which are: item 1 category 5 categories, oxidizing substances; item 2 category 5, organic peroxides.
The representative product of dangerous goods under category 5.1 is bleaching powder, which was operated by many export units as general goods before. When water or temperature is too high, it will burn or explode. Dangerous goods under category 5.1 and 5.2 are very sensitive to high temperature. In the operation of dangerous goods in international sea transportation, there are very few shipping companies that can handle this kind of products, which is quite special.
Category 6 is toxic substances and infectious substances, which are: item 1 category 6, toxic substances ; item 2, category 6, infectious substances.
Toxic or infectious substances under category 6 is represented by pesticides, sodium fluorosilicate and so on, which should be especially careful at loading and transportation to prevent damage and emission of the goods because of their toxicity to the human body.
The port that can handle the dangerous goods under category 6 need to be investigated separately.
Category 7 is radioactive substances.
There are basically no freight forwarders on the market that can handle the export of the radioactive substances under category 7 which are products with serious hazards, except the special freight forwarders or transportation companies qualified for dangerous goods, and it needs to confirm many times to identify the export ports and shipping companies which can handle such dangerous goods.
Category 8 is corrosive substances, which is divided into acid or alkali substances.
This kind of goods refers to solids or liquids that can burn human tissues and cause damage to metals and other objects, where they can cause visible necrosis of skin within 4 hours if exposed to, or cause a surface corrosion rate exceeding 6.25mm/a on No. 20 steel at a temperature of 55 ℃. There are strict special requirements for external packaging of the dangerous goods under category 8 during international sea transportation. The ports that can export category 8 dangerous goods are Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Qingdao, Tianjin and so on.
Category 9 is other dangerous substances and goods.
Among the dangerous goods under category 9, the goods mostly exported are batteries--all kinds of lithium batteries and batteries, which were exported as general goods before. As there are more safety accident caused by such products by time, they are eventually classified under category 9. Some of these lithium batteries will be used for electric cars and need to be declared as category 9 dangerous goods. Many ports in China can export category 9 dangerous goods.
